IDRISS D: I have a special relation with vinyl. I want to still press vinyl, hold that record in my hands and play it.
We are happy to present our next guest, IDRISS D!

Idriss D's musical journey began in Algeria, surrounded by a family deeply rooted in music. Influenced by his grandfather and uncles, who were prominent musicians, and inspired by the diverse sounds of Chaabi and traditional music, he developed a love for music early on. Later, he delved into Funk, Disco, and Black Music, thanks to radio shows and the guidance of his friend Nadir, a DJ. In the early '90s, he discovered the vibrant club scene in Algeria, where he was eventually invited to play by DJ Chafik. After relocating to Italy and working at a corporate job to support his passion, Idriss pursued his love for music by opening a record shop and organizing parties in Mantova. His unique style and hypnotic dance vibes quickly earned him recognition as a talented DJ in the scene.

We talked to Idriss D to find out more about his artists career, the path of his label "Memento Records" and other projects. Check it out below!
RMH:
Can you share with us the inspiration behind starting your label back in 2006? What drove you to dive into the music industry?
IDRISS D:
The goal of building up a label was to be simply free … to release my music and material from new talented up and comers without depending on any system, lengthy release timelines or politics.
RMH:
With vinyl making a resurgence in recent years, what led you to maintain a strong focus on vinyl releases amidst the digital age?
IDRISS D:
I have a special relation with vinyl, as I owned a vinyl shop once about 20 years ago, in Italy. It was called VinylMarket. I lived day in and out surrounded by boxes of vinyls, from all the parcels I collected. It has many nice yet hard memories for me. Playing vinyls allows the DJ to dig and get those hidden gems and rare materials to play in a set. This is all lost with the way we consume music these days. It’s too instant and throw away. I never throw away my vinyls, they are just amazing and everyone I love for a different reason to the next.
RMH:
As you approach the label's 20-year anniversary in 2026, what reflections do you have on the journey so far? Any standout moments or challenges that have defined your experience?
IDRISS D:
20 years for me is like reaching the top of that podium. I have seen many cycles, trends, and such. Many shops closing, and others opening, as well as major labels stopping to press vinyl. We are still here because I love the music so much. I also have a high standard and like to keep it that way, no I want to still press vinyl, hold that record in my hands and play it. That's something I want to keep, but of course, we also do digital releases too. Give everyone the option, but there is nothing like vinyl. It’s not the cheap option but, it was always worth it.
RMH:
Supporting emerging talent seems to be a core value for your label. Can you share your thoughts on the importance of nurturing new artists in the electronic music scene?
IDRISS D:
That’s my ethic, I prefer to let them learn the hard way sometimes and make their way slowly to success with nurture and care from others. Getting recognition this wat ensures that they have respect and longevity. For the first 8 years of the label, I was always focused on new talent only, but then I got so many amazing demos from friends and colleagues, that I just had to sign. This lead to come of the best collaborations and remixes we got on the label from established names.
RMH:
The upcoming release from Somne, "Parallel," is highly anticipated. Can you give us some insight into what sets this release apart?
IDRISS D:
A dear friend and also great artist Fabio Monesi played a few tracks from Somne when I was at his house in Berlin. I asked him what they were, and if he knew the artist so he could connect us. About a year later, we have this release! So, things went to plan. Ha-ha. The release is massive. All 3 tracks are just unbelievable. It's experimental, breaky and above all – classy!
RMH:
Your weekly label showcase party, 'Memento XS,' has been a staple in Barcelona since 2016. What inspired you to create this residency?
IDRISS D:
Barcelona was my home in 2015, where I met a lot of people, one of those was Gustavo an Ivan, the co-owners of Macarena. They believed in me and what I was doing at the time. And here we are all these years later, still running every Monday. The party is ours, and not mine. The guys constantly put effort, development, and hours of their time as do I, so it’s our Memento XS.
RMH:
With showcases around the world, including venues like Amnesia Milano , Cocorico, and Tresor, how do these events enhance the global reach and impact of your label, and what do you hope attendees take away from these experiences?
IDRISS D:
Since 2007, we have been already playing at a lot of the best and important venues, the music was there and we were working a lot at the time on social media, my space, emailers and more. I created the hype with a lot if passion and very little money!

I was doing this alone for a long time and didn't have access to those I needed to book events. But then I met a group of people who gave me their full trust and helped to connect as many promoters as they could, where we developed line ups for new international crowds. We were essentially unknown then. We just did a celebration party in Space Miami last year, and that was a main goal of mine that's been achieved. I am happy with how things have been going the last few years, here is to another 20!
RMH:
What else is on the horizon for you and your label?
IDRISS D:
So as the 20 year anniversary is in 2026, sounds like a long time from now, but time goes so fast, it’s scary! We will be focusing on a lot of special releases and events that year. We’ll have two different parties in two cities with massive line up’s of all the artists I love, as well as some really different art installations. So, stay tuned.
RMH:
If your music could teleport people to any location or time period, where would you want them to go and why?
IDRISS D:
Def to the hacienda in Manchester to understand exactly what it means to rave, what it means to play good music surrounded by people who are all there for the exact same reason.
